Korean Heung-ch’um at Hudson River Museum

The New York Korean Performing Arts Center presents Heung-ch’um, often called the “dance of ecstasy,” an improvisational Korean folk dance rooted in traditional gesture and movement. Known for its suspended balance pose—one foot grounded, the other extended—the dance conveys an inner, metaphysical joy through subtle motion rather than outward displays of acrobatic motion. The dancer’s use of the fan evokes birds or flowers in an abstract landscape. This culminating performance is followed by a Q&A with dancers Jiyoung Lee and Youngsil Um.
