Intro to Map & Compass with Expert Chris Varian

In this 4-hour program, licensed guide and outdoor educator Chris Varian will teach navigation skills, including how to read topographic maps and how to use a compass effectively.

Learn to read topographic maps, use a compass to find your way, and become more confident in the backcountry!
In this 4-hour program, Chris Varian, Licensed Guide and Outdoor Educator, will cover the essentials everyone should know to find their way through the woods, including:
- Selecting, reading, and navigating with topographic maps
- Understanding how map information relates to physical terrain
- Understanding true north, magnetic north, and declination adjustments
- Using a compass to plot and follow a bearing
- Planning routes and moving in the backcountry
- Knowing what to do if you get lost
With plenty of hands-on practice built into the learning, this fun program is a great way to prepare for your next adventure and find your way home!
The Guide:
Avid rock and ice climber Chris Varian is certified as a Wilderness First Responder and holds a New York license as a guide in camping, hiking, rock climbing, and ice climbing. His passion is helping people experience the outdoors safely, enjoyably, and responsibly.
