Jacob H. Schiff (1847-1920) was an investment banker known by some as “the Jewish J.P. Morgan.” In addition to his financial genius, he was one of the foremost philanthropists of his time.
Always donating at least 10% of his earnings to charity, Schiff's endowments gave life to the Henry Street Settlement, Hebrew Union College, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the YMHA, and the Jewish Division of the New York Public Library, among many other organizations. His philanthropy was not reserved for only Jewish causes. He also gave heavily to Tuskegee University, the NAACP, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Montefiore Hospital, the Bronx Zoo, and Barnard College.
Schiff tirelessly fought all forms of antisemitism and racism. He met with presidents and other heads of state to fight for the betterment of not only Jews, but women, the Deaf community, low-wage workers, and all Americans no matter their socio-economic standing.
